What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Not every dental situation is an emergency, but some definitely are. If you’re in significant pain, have experienced trauma to your mouth or teeth, or notice swelling that’s spreading, those are signs you need to be seen right away. Trying to manage a true emergency with over-the-counter pain relievers is a temporary fix at best, and it can mask symptoms that point to a more serious underlying issue.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth disorders accounted for an annual average of nearly 2 million emergency department visits in the United States during 2020–2022. Most of those visits happened because people didn’t have access to a dentist who could see them promptly. When you have a dental home, you don’t have to end up in the ER for a toothache.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

We’re equipped to handle a wide range of urgent dental situations, including:

  • Severe toothaches or sudden tooth pain that won’t let up
  • Cracked, chipped, or fractured teeth
  • Knocked-out teeth (time is critical, call us immediately)
  • Lost or broken fillings, crowns, or restorations
  • Dental abscesses or signs of infection, including swelling or fever
  • Soft tissue injuries, including cuts to the gums, lips, or tongue

If you’re not sure whether what you’re experiencing qualifies as an emergency, call us anyway. We’d much rather talk you through it over the phone than have you wait when you shouldn’t.

What Happens at an Emergency Dental Visit

When you come in for an emergency appointment, we don’t just try to manage your pain and send you home. We take the time to understand what’s actually going on. Dr. Byrne uses our 3D CBCT imaging technology to get a detailed look at what’s happening beneath the surface, which means we’re not guessing; we’re diagnosing. That changes what we’re able to do for you on the same visit.

Once we know what we’re dealing with, we’ll walk you through your options clearly. If the tooth can be saved, we’ll do what’s needed to save it. That might mean a filling or crown, or it might mean root canal therapy to address an infection at the source. In some cases, the best path forward is an extraction, and we handle many of those in-house as well.

Why Getting Care Quickly Matters

It can be tempting to wait and see if the pain goes away on its own. Sometimes it does. But dental infections, in particular, don’t follow that pattern; they tend to grow, spread, and become significantly harder to treat the longer they go unaddressed. A cracked tooth that feels manageable today can expose the nerve tomorrow, turning what would have been a straightforward fix into something much more involved.

There’s also a strong case for protecting your overall health. Untreated oral infections have been linked to broader health complications, which is one reason we take urgent dental concerns seriously from the start. Routine preventive dental care is the best way to reduce the likelihood of emergencies in the first place, but when something does happen, fast action makes a real difference.

What to Do While You Wait to Be Seen

Getting to our office quickly is always the priority, but knowing what to do in the meantime can make a real difference in your outcome. If a tooth has been knocked out, pick it up by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and try to keep it moist by placing it back in the socket, holding it between your cheek and gum, or storing it in a small container of milk. Time is critical with avulsed teeth, and getting to us within an hour gives the best chance of saving it.

For a cracked or broken tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face if you have swelling. Avoid biting on the affected side and stay away from extremely hot or cold foods and drinks until you are seen. If you have a lost crown or filling, dental cement from a pharmacy can temporarily cover the area. For infections or abscesses, do not apply heat to the area, as this can accelerate swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort on the way in, but they are not a substitute for treatment.
