Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a colorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small nasal mask. Your child breathes normally through their nose while the gas takes effect, usually within a minute or two. It does not put children to sleep. Instead, it produces a light, relaxed feeling that helps take the edge off nervousness while your child stays fully awake and able to respond to our team throughout the appointment.
Since the gas clears from the body quickly once the mask comes off, most kids feel back to normal within a few minutes of finishing treatment. There is no lingering grogginess to plan around afterward, which makes it a practical option for a routine filling, a cleaning, or another short procedure.

A 2026 systematic review examining nitrous oxide sedation across thousands of pediatric dental patients, available through the National Library of Medicine, found the approach effective for mild anxiety in the vast majority of cases, with a low rate of complications and full recovery within about five minutes. Nitrous oxide is one of the most extensively studied sedation methods used in dentistry today, largely because of this strong safety record.
