What Is Nitrous Oxide and Is It Safe for Kids?

For a lot of kids, the dentist’s chair is one of the hardest places to sit still. Wiggly legs, a tight grip on the armrest, and a dozen questions about what happens next are all part of a completely normal reaction to something new and a little bit scary. Parents often want a way to help their child feel calmer during treatment without turning the visit into an ordeal for anyone involved.

At Northside Family Dentistry, we see this every week, and nitrous oxide is one of the tools we reach for most often to help kids relax during their pediatric dental care. It is a mild, well studied form of sedation that has been used in dentistry for generations, and it remains one of the gentlest options available for children who feel nervous about treatment.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a colorless gas that is mixed with oxygen and delivered through a small nasal mask. Your child breathes normally through their nose while the gas takes effect, usually within a minute or two. It does not put children to sleep. Instead, it produces a light, relaxed feeling that helps take the edge off nervousness while your child stays fully awake and able to respond to our team throughout the appointment.

Since the gas clears from the body quickly once the mask comes off, most kids feel back to normal within a few minutes of finishing treatment. There is no lingering grogginess to plan around afterward, which makes it a practical option for a routine filling, a cleaning, or another short procedure.

How Nitrous Oxide Helps Kids During Dental Visits

We use nitrous oxide selectively, based on what each child needs, and the benefits tend to fall into a few categories:

  • Reduces anxiety and helps children feel more comfortable in the chair
  • Works quickly and wears off just as fast, with no recovery time needed
  • Allows children to stay awake, alert, and able to communicate with our team
  • Can make longer or more involved appointments feel shorter and easier

These benefits are part of why nitrous oxide has remained a trusted option in pediatric dentistry for so long, and why so many families ask for it by name once their child has tried it.

Is Nitrous Oxide Safe for Children?

Safety is usually the first question parents ask, and it is a fair one. A 2026 systematic review examining nitrous oxide sedation across thousands of pediatric dental patients, available through the National Library of Medicine, found the approach effective for mild anxiety in the vast majority of cases, with a low rate of complications and full recovery within about five minutes. Nitrous oxide is one of the most extensively studied sedation methods used in dentistry today, largely because of this strong safety record.

Every child is different though, so before recommending nitrous oxide, we review your child’s health history and talk through any questions you have. We also rely on our dental technology and careful monitoring throughout the appointment to keep your child comfortable and safe from start to finish. If nitrous oxide is not the right fit for your child, we will talk to you about other options that make sense for their needs.
